Equinox

Equinox over lake

By Barb Abney

During a year of swimming across Lake Cane,
We see the moon and planets wax and wain.
Pollen comes and pollen goes,
For many swimmers right up the nose.
Spring and summer bring more daylight,
But some prefer the winter’s night.
The people change throughout the year,
Except for Tom who’s always here.
The sun, the moon, the stars align,
to make each swim day celestially divine.

Simply Sublime

Simply Sublime Drawing

By David Johnson Jr.

The lake is glassy, flat, and shiny
Birds in the background and swimmers in suits tiny
“Enter the food chain!” yells Lucky over there
We cast him scared looks, but usually dare
The morning’s quite dark
We can barely see an inch
We’re also thinking, gator bites pinch
I inspect the water, no reptiles in sight
We splash in the depths hoping they won’t bite
The water is cool, a solid 70 degrees
Suddenly, something brushes my knees
I start to panic, WHAT COULD IT BE
I thrash and I splash making a fool of me
Notch the turtle floats up to the surface
I really do think he scared me on purpose
Is that a smirk on his little turtle face?
I’ll see to it that it gets replaced
My laps are finished and I’m completely pooped out
It’s 7:30 and my stomach’s starting to pout
I hop on my bike feeling fit and fine
A morning at Lake Cane is simply sublime
